On 1st June, 1916, 10th Rifle Brigade of 59 Brigade, 20th Division moved into the front line at Wieltje, in the Ypres salient. There arrival there coincided with a concentrated attack by the enemy on the front held by the Canadian Division just to the south at Sanctuary Wood. Although not directly involved in the fighting, 10th Rifle Brigade were affected by the considerable increase in shelling that accompanied this, which fell not just on the Canadian front but on Ypres itself, the neighbouring sectors of the front line and the approach roads and communication trenches leading to the salient. The Battalion Diary mentions that transport was delayed and it is likely that the two deaths in the battalion on 3rd June, 1916, one of who was Arthur Bond, were as a result of this hostile artillery.
